The Last Hero: Wild Bill Donovan
Published in Paperback by Random House Trade Paperbacks (March, 1984)
Author: Anthony Cave Brown
Average review score:

Comprehensive biography of father of OSS, later CIA
"Wild Bill" Donovan hails from Buffalo, N.Y.. In this extensive work of author Brown, we're provided his full story (as much as can be told, anyway) from WWII, Switzerland, the initial days at Rockefeller Center (and later, Langley), legal inception and structural formulation and dialogue with the president and military services to form the OSS, presently known as the CIA.

Exceptionally well-written (and just as exemplary, by the way, as author Brown does with Britain's analogue "C") and informative. Superb on WWII OSS operations in Europe. Author Brown explains much of what didn't already know, and fills-in wonderfully where we do.

Not short on pages, it captivates for just about every one of them.

What was the understanding then? That Hoover feared no one? You may disclose otherwise.

Good man, that Donovan. Good too, Brown, for work well done.

Last Week My Brother Anthony Died

Authors: Randie Julien, Martha Whitmore Hickman, and Randi Julien

Last Week My Brother Anthony Died
This is a sad story. It is very touching and sensitive. This would be a good book to share with a child that has lost a loved one, but should not be used out of that context. It might help a young child cope with the death of a loved one and maybe understand that it is okay to miss them, but it is also okay to go on with their own life.

Lefty and the Button Men
Published in Paperback by Xlibris Corporation (22 May, 2000)
Author: Anthony Valerio
Average review score:

Melus
Subsequent artistic attempts at humanizing the don includes Analyze This and The Sopranos. Both of these productions feature the don characters in therapy. Valerio's use of the therapy device, though, is unique and visionary. It not only predates these films, but also shows the don in control, as therapist, not patient. This configuration emphasises the power of Italian-American culture to nurture individual identity. Johnny, the don, serves as cultural nursemaid to the reborn Italian-American, Nicholas.

Please read it too.
Much can be said about the spectacular photography. But to capture the real beauty of the golf clubs, you need to read the text. For all of us who have enjoyed a pint in a dirty bar, this book captures the essence of the gentility of the game.

The Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley Songbook
Published in Paperback by Cherry Lane Music (August, 1997)
Author: Cherry Lane Music
Average review score:

The finest collection of music from Bricusse & Newley.
The late, great Anthony Newley and his writing partner Leslie Bricusse gave us some superb standards from their shows over the years. All the greats such as "What Kind of Fool Am I" and "Once In A Lifetime" from "Stop the World" are included as well as songs from the TV "Peter Pan" that they wrote in the seventies and "Candy Man" from the film "Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory". Along with photographs on stage and off, as well as personal memories from Bricusse, this is a great way to remember Tony Newley. This kind of music will never die! Lewis Hine: Passionate Journey: Photographs 1905-1937
Published in Hardcover by Edition Stemmle (April, 1997)
Authors: Karl Steinorth, Anthony Bannon, Marianne Fulton, Lewis Hine, and International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House
Average review score:

In passing...
While at work in the college library, I passed by this book. I flipped through the pages, thinking I'd only take a brief look. I realized that I had seen these photographs before, and I became fascinated. I learned so much about the photographer through this book. It is a fine collection of Hine's work overall. It shows classic photos from everything he became involved in, such as child labor, women at work, and the working poor.

Lie Groups Beyond an Introduction
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (15 June, 2002)
Author: Anthony W. Knapp
Average review score:

Review of Knapp's "Lie groups: beyond an introduction."
The short version: this is a superbly written and conceived book; if I had to learn this material (the basic theory of
structure and representation of Lie algebras and groups,
especially semimsimple ones) from a single book, this is
the one I'd choose, among those I've seen. If you know the
basics of abstract algebra and some very basic concepts from
topology and manifolds, and you want to learn this material,
use this book. It would be a good reference, too, as it is
easy to find things in it, and takes a fairly modern, sophisticated approach (without sacrificing motivation and
intuition).

The long version, if you want more convincing or details:

I have used several books recently in learning the structure and
representation theory of Lie algebras and groups (especially Humphreys' Introduction to Lie algebras and representation theory, Fulton
and Harris' "Representation Theory," Varadarajan's "Lie groups,
Lie algebras, and their representations.") Although I came to Knapp's book with a decent background from the others, I think it's the best pedagogically, for someone with a modicum of mathematical sophistication and some basics like abstract
algebra and an idea of what a smooth manifold is), and a smattering of Lie theory. Some examples of the book's strength:
Elementary but potentially confusing concepts (like complexification, real forms, field extensions)
are explained thoroughly but in a sophisticated way, rather
than viewed as obvious. Carefully chosen examples motivate and
clarify the general theory; consequently even though the book
is completely rigorous, and carefully delineates lemmas, proofs,
remarks, definitions, and the like, it seems less dry then some
others (e.g. Varadarajan, from my point of view). But the point
of the examples, and their relation to the general theory, is
made clear, so they do not provide an overload of detail or b
obscure the main structure. Thought is always given to the
reader's understanding, not just to logical correctness, though
the author also takes the point of view, with which I concur,
that logical clarity and sufficient detail are essential
to understanding. Relations between ideas, alternative
proofs, and the structure of the theory to come are discussed
thoroughly, but such discussion is clearly demarcated from
the main structure of the argument, so that the latter is never
obscured. This is a fantastic book, and exactly what I was
looking for. Whether you are learning the material for the
first time, or want to review it or refer to, it is a superb
source.
